The South Las Vegas Strip is anchored by one large poker room at MGM Grand, and five small rooms. Most of the south strip poker rooms are populated by tourists, with a handful of locals. The exception is Tropicana, which offers many promotions that attract local grinders to help prop the games up.
Excalibur – The 12 table Excalibur Poker Room offers two cash games. The main game is a 1/2 No Limit Texas Hold’em game. There is also a 2-6 spread limit game with a single $2 blind that is offered during peak hours. The poker room at Excalibur offers four tournaments each day. The times for the tournaments are 9am, 1pm, 5pm, and 8pm.
Luxor – Underneath the pyramid in the desert, the 11 table Luxor Poker Room spreads one game. The game is 1/2 No Limit Texas Hold’em. The poker room at Luxor also offers tournaments each day at 10:30am, 12:30pm, and 8:30pm.
Mandalay Bay – The Mandalay Bay Poker Room offers players many different promotions at their 10 table poker room. These promotions change on a daily basis. The game that runs around the clock is 1/2 No Limit Texas Hold’em. There are also five tournaments spread each day.
MGM Grand – The flagship of the South Las Vegas Strip, the 22 table poker room at MGM Grand offers multiple games that run often. There are two daily tournaments at 11:05am and 7:05pm. There is also a HORSE tournament held every Tuesday at 7:15pm. The MGM Grand Poker Room is also home to the Grand Challenge Tournament Series. This series offers not just No Limit Texas Hold’em tournaments, but also Pot Limit Omaha, Omaha High/Low, Seven Card Stud High/Low, and HORSE.
Monte Carlo – Monte Carlo offers a poker room that is set away from the casino floor, giving players a private setting free of smoke and other casino annoyances. The main game at the Monte Carlo Poker Room is 1/3 No Limit Texas Hold’em. There is also a 2-6 spread limit game offered upon request. At 9am, 6pm, and 11pm, there is a No Limit Hold’em tournament. Every Wednesday the tournaments have a $10 bounty in addition to the standard entry fee.
Tropicana – The Tropicana Poker Room is home to Jamie Gold, winner of the 2006 World Series of Poker Main Event in 2006. Tropicana has many promotions that reward players for putting in long hours. Players can earn up to $12 an hour in prop pay, up to 12 hours in a day. This attracts many tough local players to keep the games going. To pay for this promotion, there is a jackpot rake of up to $3 in addition to the standard rake. The main game is 1/2 No Limit Texas Hold’em. There is also a fixed limit game during some peak hours, typically a 2/4 game. On Mondays, there is a 4/8 mixed game. The poker room at Tropicana offers four daily tournaments, all of which have a high house juice associated with them.
